Habitual robber dies

MASERU – A 27-year-old Khubetsoana man died at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital a few hours after residents had detained and assaulted him the whole of last week Saturday night.
With his whole body covered in blood, police rushed Thabiso Majakata to the hospital a few minutes after he was brought to Mabote Police on Sunday afternoon.
“We are now waiting for a postmortem report to ascertain cause of death although we suspect he could have died as a result of injuries he sustained during the assault,” Mabote Police Officer Commanding Criminal Investigations Department, Inspector Mphelehetse Khatleli said.
According to the police, the now-deceased had previously had a brush with the law.
“He has been in and out of our cells and we had, on numerous occasions, warned him against breaking into people’s homes and snatching handbags, phones and wallets,” Insp Khatleli said.
It is alleged on late Saturday afternoon, Majakata allegedly snatched one man’s mobile phone and wallet before taking to his heels.
But he was not so lucky this time around after the Khubetsoana resident he had robbed in the area managed to identify him.
With the help of other residents, a group reportedly followed Majakata to his residence where they quizzed him about the robbery.
“We understand he was taken to the house of one of the residents where, from what he said before his death, he was assaulted the whole night and part of Sunday. He was in a bad state when they brought him here,” Insp Khatleli said.
He said following Majakata’s death on Sunday, August 22, no one had been arrested in connection with the suspected murder.
“We know some of the people who might have been involved in the suspected murder and have since interviewed them. We are waiting for the postmortem report to substantiate our investigations before we can charge those found on the wrong side of the law,” he said.
