17 municipality employees face corruption charges

…BLOEMFONTEIN – Seventeen employees of the Mangaung Municipality facing corruption and fraud charges are expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court as soon as their cases have being finalised.

The 17 are part of a group of Mangaung Municipality employees whose criminal activities have being uncovered by the Bloemfontein Anti Fraud and Corruption unit (Hawks), since the beginning of the year.

Communications manager at the Mangaung Municipality, Qondile Kedama commended the Hawks for successfully uprooting the rampant fraud and corruption practices within the municipality.

“So far, two employees have resigned and five suspended while seven have being dismissed in connection with fraud and corruption incidents. The 17 facing charges related to financial misconduct will soon be taken to task,” Kedama said yesterday, (Thursday).

Kedama noted that no one is above the law, adding even the executive mayor himself is liable to be investigated if there are strong suspicions of his involvement in any criminal activity.

The General Manager of the Bloemfontein Anti Corruption unit Mzwandile Tollie attributed their success to rooting out corruption to the cooperation of the local community.

“We are frequently tipped by members of the community about criminal activities happening in their respective communities as well as within the municipality. Our informers’ identities are always kept confidential to protect them,” he said.
