FS giants to lock horns

BLOEMFONTEIN – It’s time for Premier League (PSL) teams to strengthen their squads prior to the start of the season on Wednesday, February 15.

While the season is still off, PSL side Free State stars has had a series of friendly games to prepare their squad for the new season.

Stars are on sixth position and they hope to finish in the top four of this year’s season.

A renowned Ea Lla Koto’s Public Relation Officer Lebo Maketa told Public Eye in an interview on Thursday, January 19, that the team commenced engaging in friendly games from Saturday January 21 when they played against Carara Kicks at Charles Mopedli Stadium. Stars won by 3-1.

“The friendly games will be helpful to the team, especially our coach who will be in a position to identify our short comings. We are not to take them like practice but we will be ensuring that our opponents find the squad tough, as we know that they will be prepared for a win against us,” he said.

Maketa said prior the friendly games, the team took a two-week camp in Klerksdorp.

“Our boys are ready and I’m aware that they are getting to know each other. The camp went well. Its results will be seen in the coming friendly games,” he added.

In the first 15 minutes Ea Lla Koto had a chance but botched to take advantage of the conditions on Kicks spongy defence. Kicks initial effort in the game resulted into the back of the net by Nkane Zwane but the referee assumed that Zwane was in an offside position.

Kicks made an impact by giving Stars a tough game as they struggled to win it.
As part of its preparations Stars will this time face their rivals in the league and in the province, Bloemfontein Celtic; the Lesotho based clubs, Masheshena and Lesotho’s national team. The matches will be played in Maseru, Lesotho at Setsoto stadium.

Maketa said: “This is how we will be revamping and keeping shape before the start of PSL season. The good thing is that no injuries so far have been reported.”

Maketa had also told Public Eye on January 5 about the team’s plan to release five players.

He said: “Yes things haven’t changed. We placed Madoda Motha, Thamane Motaung, Mxolisi Gumede, strikers Mpho Makola and Tebelo Mofokeng on transfer list.”

Ea Lla Koto’s first game of the league will be against former league champions Super Sports United, on February 15 at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria. The team hasn’t announced any new signings.

It has used the reserve goalkeeper Ayanda Mtshali in its friendly games because the club’s number one goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene is representing his country Zambia in the 2012 African Nation’s cup which is taking place in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
